    Why is ancient trade always assume to go thru a chain of middlemen when each transfer would reduce the profit? It is more likely that trading was as direct as possible even over very long distances.

    this, they sure were not passing surviving Macaws from hand to hand on the trips north

    The assumption that such valued religious and political objects were passed up in round about trade is illogical and frankly patronizing.
